Bangalore International Centre had arranged a very interesting event viz., multimedia lecture on “Vachana Sahitya – The eternal truths of the Veerashaivas” by Ms. Sumitra Nitin, a Carnatic musician and Bharatanatyam dancer on Wednesday, 17th April, 2013 at t 6:30 pm. The event was moderated by Mrs. Geetha Rao.
Ms. Sumitra through the still pictures/videos/audios unfurled the Kannada Vachanas brimming with piety and aesthetic beauty, which effortlessly bridge the chasm of the centuries in their ageless appeal. She sang kannada Vachanas of various sharanas viz., Basavanna, Allama Prabhu, Dasimayya, Akka Mahadevi etc.
She traced traced the history of the Sharana movement to provide glimpses into the lives of a few Vachanakaras including Basavanna, Allama Prabhu and Akka Mahadevi. She also discussed the universal truths in Vachana Sahitya, their innate poetry, imagery and mysticism. Today many musicians and dancers use Vachana texts in their presentations.
There was a Q & A session after her lecture.
The programme was well attended and it was appreciated by one and all.
