Discussion on "Tidings of Troubled Times" by Mr. Manish Tewari

Held on Monday, 6th November, 2017 at 6.30 PM

Bangalore International Centre had organised the discussion on “Tidings of Troubled Times” authored by Mr. Manish Tewari, Former Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Government of India on Monday, 6th November 2017 at 6.30 PM at its auditorium. The author was in conversation with Prof. Srikrishna Ayyangar, Associate Professor, Public Policy, Azim Premji University. Mr. Aakar Patel, Executive Director, Amnesty International India & Columnist chaired and moderated the event.

Tidings of Troubled Times: This collection of articles shed light on the conflicts and fault-lines of the contemporary world – President Trump’s rejection of American multiculturalism, the long trail of terrorism, a right-wing surge in India, China’s emergence as a global bully, dangers of an instable Pakistan and Kashmiri militancy.

Aakar Patel set the tone of the meeting by asking Mr. Manish Tewari about his own impressions about the current political scenario. Manish Tewari was measured in his views and stressed that the present government had rushed into several areas (examples: demonitisation, GST et al) without taking into account several factors and the consequences. As a result a whole lot of avoidable consequences which has caused severe disruptions in the economic and social fabric of the country. He was unsparing about certain other aberrations and excesses leading to communal divides and violent clashes.

Prof. Srikrishna Ayyangar was less severe on his appraisal of the present scenario, but he also felt that the Government should move in its drives with more deliberation and caution.

Aakar Patel gently nudged both Manish Tewari and Srikrishna Ayyangar to elaborate on the points they were making. He thereafter moderated the Q & A session with aplomb and finesse. A packed house enthusiastically participated in the discussion.
