Bangalore International Centre had arranged a thought-provoking Panel Discussion on “This most certainly is not Cricket!!” on Friday, 28th June, 2013 at 6.30 PM at its auditorium. The panelists were Mr. E A S Prasanna, renowned Cricketer of yesteryears, Mr. Suresh Menon, Eminent Journalist and Dr. AdityaSondhi, well-known Advocate of Karnataka High Court and Supreme Court of India. The discussion was moderated by Mrs. NupurBasu, Senior Journalist and Independent documentary film maker.
It was a free-wheeling discussion in which the moderator questioned and elicited the response from the panelists about the malaise affecting the game of cricket in India. Dr. AdityaSondhi pointed out that there is currently no legal framework to either control or regulate betting in cricket and that the enormous popularity of the game has fuelled opportunities in betting, particularly in the shorter format (one-day cricket/T-20) of cricket. Mr. Suresh Menon observed that phenomena of “match-fixing” or “spot-fixing” was known even earlier; however, the shorter format of the game provides much greater speculative possibilities to gamblers which is very adroitly manipulated by the bookies mafia to arrange spot-fixing by unscrupulous and greedy players. MrPrasanna recognized that the shorter format of the game has improved the financial stability of several players which were earlier not available. At the same time, he felt that in the process greed has corrupted several cricketers. All the panelists agreed that legislation of betting in cricket may not obtain complete success. The anecdotal experiences shared by the panelists were extremely interesting and revealing
The Q & A session after the discussion was informative and interesting
