Bangalore International Centre had arranged a very interesting event viz., “The Dance of Siva : The Nataraja Bronze, Coomaraswamy’s Legacy and Archaeometallurgical and Stylistic Insights”, a lecture with visuals by Prof SharadaSrinivasn, Professor at National Institute of Advanced Studies, on Friday, 14thDecember, 2012 at 6:30 pm.
In her Lecture Demonstration , Prof. SharadaSrinivasan elucidated facets of the great bronze casting traditions of medieval southern India through archaemetallurgical, technical and art historical insights on their dating, and speculations on archaeo-astronimical aspects concerning the enigmatic Nataraja icon. The lec-dem attempted to evoke the aesthetics and technique of South Indian bronze casting, the artistic and philosophical milieu enriched by the devotional poetry and acts of patronage, and possible perceptions of the cosmos, through the illustrated talk and also through BharataNatyam dance itself. Her lec-dem was supported with two video clippings which were very interesting.
The programme was well attended and well- appreciated.
