Bangalore International Centre had arranged a very interesting event viz., “Thanjavur- A Thousand Year Old Temple and its cultural legacy”, a lecture with visuals by renowned Bharatnatyam dancer and author Kalaimamani Lakshmi Viswanathan, on Monday, 24th September, 2012 at 6:30 pm. The event was moderated by Mrs. GeethaRao.
Lakshmi Viswanathan through the pictures of Thanjavur temple traced the roots to Tanjore and paid tribute to 1000 year old temple. She focused on the temple from the view point of a dancer and dance historian who is aware that all the related arts such as music, sculptures, paintings as well as the Hindu religion are represented in this remarkable temple. She mentioned that one can gaze with awe at this majestic structure from a distance as one drives towards Tanjavur. Every feature of the temple is larger than life- the monolithic Nandi, the gigantic Dwarakapalakas and the elegant structures in the niches around the central shrine. They are distinguished by an elegant simplicity in lines and ornamentation.
She highlighted that the temple occupies an area measuring about 750 feet x 400 feet, in a fort, surrounded by a moat. It is a marvel of engineering considering the technology of those ancient times.
She concluded her lecture with a graceful dance piece which was a visual treat for the audience.
The programme was well attended and it was appreciated by one and all.
