Bangalore International Centre had arranged a talk on “Textiles - Revival of Traditional Handloom” by Rta Kapur Chishti, Recognized textile scholar, author and editor on Friday, 11th December, 2015 at 6.30 PM. Mrs. Geetha Rao, Former Chairperson, The Crafts Council of Karnataka chaired and moderated the discussion.
In a free ranging talk, textile expert, Rta Kapur Chishti, discussed about the handloom sector. Some of the questions she addressed were its relevance in today's world, both in terms of usefulness and in terms of marketing. How can India leverage its tradition of handloom weaving in the national and international market? She also discussed the complicated process of cotton quality, availability, distribution and collaboration with respect to how cotton is produced and used, about endangered silk varieties such as Eri, Muga and Tussar. As someone who has worked for several decades in the sector, she narrated how to combine the unique skills that India has in spinning and weaving with contemporary usage for both stitched and on stitch garments; as well as furnishing and home products. She talked about entrepreneurship in the sector and how the different stakeholders in and outside government can help this Indian tradition flourish.
