Bangalore International Centre had arranged a talk on “Women on Record – Music, Marrket& Technology in early 20th Century India” by VidyaShah onSaturday, 29th June, 2013at 6.30 PM. Mr. VikramSampath, well-known author and Historian chaired and moderated the discussion after the presentation.
In her presentation, Vidya traced the beginning of the gramophone era in the early twentieth century in India and stressed that it was women performers who came to the forefront to capture the entertainment market. Through a audio-visual presentation, during the course of which she also sang some old classics, outlined how the vinyl records, with their three minute format, came to change the social norms of those days. The presentation included recordings, video clips, interviews and songs by several performers of yesteryears.
The well-attended audience enjoyed the unique event which was enriched by enlightened comments from Mr. VikramSampath.
