Panel Discussion on "What Ails Indian Sports?"

Held on Friday, 23rd February, 2018 at 6.30 PM

Bangalore Bangalore International Centre had organised a Panel Discussion “What Ails Indian Sports?” on Friday, 23rd February, 2018 at 6.30 pm. The discussants were Nandan Kamath and Ashwini Nachappa. Suresh Menon chaired and moderated the event.

The erudite Panelists lamented the fact that average Indian pays little interest to the administration of sports in India. Only during the Olympics, every four years, and from time to time with other sports, do we ask ourselves: what ails our sporting world. The Associations are also in utter neglect and in a state of lethargy, or very active in political conspiracies. The issues of corruption which cast a long shadow over the New Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010 and the attitude of our officials at the time were pointed out. The ugly issues regarding the running of India’s richest sports body, the BCCI, became a matter for the Supreme Court, no less, to intervene in. How “national” are our national sports bodies? What can be done to improve their functioning?. These points were discussed elaborately by the discussants.

It is ironical that such a relevant and knowledgeable discussion attracted only a sparse audience.
