Bangalore International Centre had arranged the screening of two documentary films about “Rise and Fall of Berlin Wall” on Thursday, 11th August, 2016 at 6.00 PM at its auditorium. The films were introduced and presented by Mr. Stanley Pinto, member of BIC. These documentaries depict the circumstances led to both rise and fall of the Berlin wall.
The Berlin Wall was constructed by the GDR to prevent the massive emigration and defection that had marked East Germany and the communist Eastern Bloc during the post-World War II period. Its construction began on 13 August 1961.
In September 1989, protest demonstrations by East Germans wanting to leave to the West spread throughout East Germany. Finally, the gates were opened on 09 November and the euphoric crowds brought the wall down.
The two documentaries cover the circumstances and events leading to the Rise and the Fall of the wall. They are a vivid and scintillating recounting through historical footage and interviews with almost every legendary leader, from Honecker and Khrushchev to Gorbachev and Bush senior, and Poland's Jaruzelski and Romania's Ceaucescu and JFK and more, who were involved. To coin a phrase, they are quite simply the next best thing to being there.
The screening was well attended by the audience.
