Bangalore International Centre had arranged a talk on “The Provocations of the Public University in India’ by Prof. Janaki Nair, Professor, Jawaharalal Nehru University, New Delhi on Thursday, 14th July, 2016 at 6.30 PM. The talk was chaired and moderated by Prof. ChandanGowda,Professor, Azim Premji University, Bangalore.
Prof. Janaki Nair discussed about the series of events at some of India's leading public universities and institutions which have brought a new focus on the achievements and problems associated with these spaces of higher education. Questions of what the goals and futures of higher education are, and whether the existing university space is appropriate to these goals, were raised. As she put it, the public university is being increasingly seen as a site of provocation, not always of the productive kind. Her suggestion was that assessing the public university, its histories, its achievements, and its possible futures will go a long way towards asserting its continued and vital relevance in a society such as ours.
Prof. ChandanGowda moderated the interactive discussions with the audience with considerable skill and knowledge.
