Bangalore International Centre had arranged a talk on “Pakistan : The Psyche of a Nation”by Air CommmodoreParvezKhokhar V M (Retd)on Friday, 11th October, 2013 at 6.30 PM.Professor BidandaChengappa of Christ University chaired and moderated the talk.
Air Com. Khokhar in his presentation highlighted the fact that Pakistan will always have our attention, for a host of reasons and their erratic behavior will continue to influence our domestic and international policies. While much has been written and said about our intertwined histories and day to day relations, it is essential to comprehend why that nation behaves as it does.
He stressed that Pakistan, since its inception, has suffered from a crisis of identity since there is a conscious effort to totally disassociate with its common heritage with India. As a result, an adversorial attitude has been consistently sought to be built yup against India. Ethnically the Punjabis have sought to dominate the Pakistani politics and this has been the root cause, apart from other causes, for the separation of Bangladesh from Pakistan and for the discord between West Pakistan, Baluchistan and other north-western parts.
His talk explored all these contradictions in Pakistan and the roleplayed by the Army in not onlyshaping the eventswithin the country, but also in itspolicytowardsIndia and other countries. Hisprognisiswasclear : one has to learn to co-existwith Pakistan on an « as iswhereis basis » and that the Army in Pakistan willnever permit democracy to thrive in the wayitdoes in India.
The Q & A session after the talk elicited a lot of well-informed opinions from the Chair as well as from the audience.
