Screening of a film "O Friend, This Waiting!" by Ms. Sandhya Kumar and Justin McCarthy

Held Wednesday, 7th November, 2012 at 6:30 pm.

Bangalore International Centre had arranged the screening of a film “O Friend, This Waiting!” on Wednesday, 7th November, 2012 at 6:30 pm. The filmmakers Ms. Sandhya Kumar and Mr. Justin McCarthy were present at the screening to field questions.
The poetic documentary by Bangalore based independent filmmaker Sandhya Kumar and US born Indian Bharatnatyam dancer and musician Justin McCarthy explored the life of the devadasi employing the musical form padam as a narrative vehicle. For close to 400 years, the devadasi lived twin lives – that of a servant of god, and as a courtesan. The film examined the political, artistic and feminist aspects of the padam (with particular emphasis on the works of the seventeenth century Telugu composer Kshetrayya) and its most controversial proponent, the devadasi.

It was a brilliant film and a visual treat for the packed audience at BIC. The film was funded by India Foundation for the Arts.
