Bangalore International Centre had arranged a Book release and discussion of “Ocean of Cobras” a Novel by Mr. Murad Ali Baig and a conversation between Mr. Murad Ali Baig and Mr. Amitava Banerjee, on Friday, 18th September, 2015 at 6.30 PM.
The Ocean of Cobras is a tale of love and war, of compassion and cruelty in a period of Mughal grandeur and passionate pride. The story of Dara is a true story that many people in India still remember despite the passage of the centuries.
The novel recounted by a narrator who is an eunuch, intimate with all the princes, princesses and personages of the court, takes the reader through the magnificent royal palace into the harem, to royal hunts and to the kingdoms of rival and vassal rulers. Mubarak Ali, the narrator, fights in the armies of the rival princes and describes six exciting battles. His adventure takes the reader from the limpid lakes of Kashmir to the deserts of Sindh and the lush forests of every part of India. He tells a tale of high adventure, reckless courage, ruthless cunning, tender romance, treacherous betrayal and heart-wrenching tragedy in a world of incredible luxury and decadence in what was once the richest empire of the world.
Amitava Banerjee, who probed Murad to elicit information about his motivation to write the book and about several historical events, proved himself to be person with a lot of information on the subject. So, the dialogue between the two brought out several interesting details about social, economic and cultural aspects of Mughal civilisation and information about historical personalities of that period.
The discussion after the book release was scintillating, in which a large audience participated enthusiastically.
