There was a scintillating talk on “Multi-Million Dollar Art from the Australian Aboriginal Dreamtime”, delivered by Dr. Dayalan Devanesen, (the first person of Indian origin to be appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia in 1997), at Bangalore International centre on 15 th July, 2009 at 6 PM.
In a lucid talk lasting over more than an hour, and aided with slides of the art forms of the aborigines, Dr. Devanesen took the audience (the hall was jam-packed) through the deserts and sand-dunes of Australia where the aborigines have lived for over 40,000 years. Dr. Devanesen, who as a young CMC (Vellore) trained medical doctor had gone to Australia to live and work among the aborigines, narrated how he learnt their language, established his credentials with them, gained credibility and finally acceptance from them. Then they told him about their life-style, philosophy, their dreams and how they conceive and look at their own art forms. The audience heard Dr. Devanesen with rapt attention.
In the interactive session that followed, Dr. Devanesen expounded on the life-style and philosophy of the aborigines in greater detail.. “Sharing and Caring” has continued to be the watchword of their simple life. They were given citizenship rights in Australia as late as 1967!
It was indeed a very informative and rewarding evening at Bangalore International Centre.
