Bangalore International Centre had arranged a Discussion at the launch of the Book “The Modi Myth” by Mr. S Nihal Singh on 15th November, 2015 at 6.00 PM. Mr. Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, independent journalist and educator chaired and moderated the event.
In his brief welcome address, the Director highlighted the eminence of Mr. Nihal Singh as a Veteran and astute journalist. Mr. Guha Thakurta, who thereafter engaged Mr. Nihal Singh in a very thought-provoking dialogue, probed as to what led the veteran journalist to write a book on the Prime Minister within 15 months of his coming into power. In his response, Mr Nihal Singh explained that Mr. Modi’s style of functioning and the changes he introduced - a strong, autocratic style of concentration of all power and authority in the PMO, a general abandonment of the consensual approach to governance, the open introduction of RSS –inspired majoritarianism through Hindutva etc. – were such a violent departure from the past Nehruvian liberalism that he felt compelled to write. He noted with a certain degree of sadness that this was inevitably leading to a divisive trend in both political and social life and disturbing the secular fabric built up over the years by leaders of eminence. He felt that Mr Modi, now that he is the Prime minister with a comfortable majority in the Lok Sabha, must try to free himself from the shackles of being a Pracharak alone, and be as inclusive a PM as Vajpayee was when he was PM.
The packed audience, which enthusiastically participated in the interactive session, thoroughly enjoyed the witty interventions of Mr. Guha Thakurta.
