This event was arranged in collaboration with Takshashila Institution.
The meeting started with the observation of a minute’s silence in the memory of Prof. U R Ananthamurthy who passed away a few days back. Recalling his association with Prof. Ananthamurthy, Dr.Guha referred to his multi-faceted genius and his questioning spirit. He then talked about the rationale behind his compilation of the book on makers of modern Asia and briefly summarised about the eleven path-breaking leaders of modern Asia who shaped and fashioned the growth and development in their respective countries. He emphasised that while all these countries recorded impressive economic growth, it was the remarkable political stability in those countries that enabled economic growth. The other panellists, Amb.NirupamaRao and Mr.NitinPai explored as to whether there were more leaders in Asia who played a significant role and whether the fact that there were colonial rulers who helped the growth of political stability through a process of unification within the country in opposition to colonial hegemony.
It was a scintillating discussion, sparkling with wit, in which a large audience participated enthusiastically.
