Book Launch of the Book “Latin America: an introduction” by Dr. Vasant Kumar Bawa, well known historian, activist and Former member of the IAS. Moderated by Ambassador Nazareth, Former Ambassador India to Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Belize

Held on Monday, 7th February, 2011 at 6.30 pm

Bangalore International Centre had arranged a book launch of the Book “Latin America- an Introduction” by Dr. V.K. Bawa on Monday, 7th February, 2011 at 6:30 pm.  The Talk was moderated by Ambassador P.A. Nazareth, Former Ambassador of India to Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Belize.

In a wide-ranging talk, Dr. Bawa traced the growth of colonialism in Latin America and how it had impacted on the psyche of the people living in various countries within that region. He also dwelt on the curious phenomenon of most of the Latin American countries aligning themselves with India and other non- aligned countries, instead of siding with their immediate neighbour, viz., USA. His feeling was that it was the aggressive attitude and approach of the USA which was mostly responsible for the growth of anti-US sentiments in those countries. Through a series of personal and anecdotal recollections, both Dr. Bawa and Ambassador Nazareth outlined the remarkable past and the future prospects in Latin American countries. Everyone present enjoyed the informative talk and broke into a huge guffaw when Ambassador Nazareth recounted the lament of a well- known Mexican diplomat: “Oh God, why have you placed us so far away from you, and so near the United States of America?”
