In observance of International Women’s Day, Bangalore International Centre’s BIC Gender Forum has arranged a series of programmes in 2013-14. As the fourth programme under this series, BIC Gender Forum in collaboration with ING Vysya Bank had arranged a vibrant musical programmetitled “Women composers of India – Celebrating the unsung – Songs in eight languages”. The concept, Research, Script and narration was done by Dr. SakuntalaNarasimhan a classical musician. Ms. ArchanaUdupa, well-known award winning singer was the Lead singer with two other accompanists. The musical evening was well attended by about 100 people.
This programme, based on historical research, began with the contribution of women to the Sanskrit hymns of the Rig Veda, and went on to trace the feminist-cultural evolution through two thousand years, covering songs in Hindi, Marathi, Gujarathi, Telugu, Kannada, Tamil and Kashmiri, ending with a 21st century composition in a genre called tillana, which is based on complicated calculations (and therefore considered till recently, to be "inappropriate" for women performers.). Interspersed with short commentaries on the lives of the composers, the programmeincluded songs by Vagambrini, Meerabai, LalDed, Andal, BahinaBai, TallapakamTimmakka, and others.
