Bangalore International Centre had arranged a Talk on “Is Indian Democracy in Danger?” by Mr. Kuldip Nayar, renowned Journalist, on Friday, 14th September, 2012 at 6:00 pm. The talk was moderated by Mr. K.S. Dakshina Murthy, Independent Journalist.
In a scintillating and nostalgic note, Mr. Nayar asked “When was Indian Democracy not in danger?” He recollected the bloody days of partition when he migrated from Pakistan to India. That was the time when the entire world believed that the new-born democracy in India would collapse. Yet through all the trials and tribulations, it survived. Mr. Nayar at the same time cautioned against complacency and highlighted the threats from poverty, caste-conflicts, communalism and parochialism. He took a dim view of the present-day politicians and felt that an enlightened civil society must engage with governance to ensure that the basic structure of our democracy does not get fractured. The packed audience in the auditorium could not agree with him more.
