Held on Friday, 28th April, 2017 at 6.30 PM

Bangalore International Centre had arranged atalk on “Gandhi For The Twenty First Century” by Amb.(Retd) Pascal Alan Nazareth, Former Ambassador/ High Commissioner of India to Egypt, Mexico and Ghanaon Friday, 28th April, 2017 at 6.30 PM. Justice N SantoshHegde, Former justice of the Supreme Court of India, Solicitor General of India and Lokayukta for Karnataka chaired and moderated the session.
The incredibly difficult scenario in which Gandhiji enunciated his Satyagraha, Truth and Non Violence strategy in South Africa in 1906 and the many successes achieved with it by him, and subsequently his followers in various countries, during the twentieth century was presented in the first part of the talk.

Dwelling on the relevance of Gandhiji in the 21st century, Amb. Nazareth dealt with several climatic events like the dismemberment of the USSR, the demolition of the Berlin Wall, the reunification of Germany, Independence of South Africa, Brexit, Victory of Donald Trump in USA etc to suggest that it was Gandhiji’s concept of moving away from violence and involving the common people to make changes in the political processes that has found universal acceptance in the 21st century.
Broadly endorsing Amb. Nazareth’s approach, Justice SantoshHegde referred to the popular non-violent upsurge which decimated the Congress in the post-emergency electoral process and an identical non-violent upheaval catalysed by Anna Hazare in recent years which led to the parliamentary approval for the creation of the institution of Lok Pal.
