Bangalore International Centre had arranged the screening of the film “Finding Carlton- Uncovering the Story of Jazz in India” by Mr. Susheel J Kurien on Monday, 15th October, 2012 at 6:00 pm. Mr. Kurien was present to interact with the audience after the screening. Mr. Stanley Pinto moderated the event.
This documentary film gave a vivid look into the vibrant jazz culture of the past through the eyes of Carlton Kitto,a living jazz guitar legend from Kolkata. The film flowed smoothly through time, going back to what some considered India’s jazz age—from the 1920s, when foreign bands started arriving in Bombay and Calcutta. A 1926 recording of Jimmy Lequime’s Soho Blues at Calcutta’s Grand Hotel (now The Oberoi Grand) is claimed as India’s first jazz recording.
It was a deeply rewarding film. The discussion after the film was very interesting and enriching.
