Bangalore International Centre had arranged a talk on “Einstein's century old prediction verified at last: The momentous discovery of gravitational waves” by Prof.AjitKembhavi, Emeritus Professor, Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) at its auditorium on Friday, 3rd June, 2016 at 6.30 PM. Prof. Siraj Hasan, Former Director, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bengaluru, chaired and moderated the discussions.
Prof.Kembhavi through his powerpoint presentation explained that in 1916 Albert Einstein formulated his General Theory of Relativity, which is considered to be one of the most perfect of all theories of physics. In 1917 he predicted from his theory the discovery of gravitational waves. Prof.Kembhavidescribed the heroic struggle to detect such waves, and their successful detection announced on February 11, 2016. He said that Indian physicists had a major role to play in the discoveryand more excitingly, a few days after the announcement, the Government of India approved the LIGO-India project, which aims to build a detector of gravitational waves in India. He emphasised that this mammoth experiment will enable us to pinpoint the cosmic generators of the gravitational waves. Prof.Kembhavi described about this experiment and the exciting scientific and technological challenges that it presents. His talk was aimed at the general audience.
It was one of the finest and most inspirational talk ever heard in BIC.
The Q & A session after the talk was informative and interesting.
