Bangalore International Centre had arranged a Book Release –cum- Discussion on the book “The Future of Disability Law in India” authored by Ms. Jayna Kothari, Founder Member, Centre for Law and Policy Research, Bangalore. The event was on Friday, 20th July, 2012 at 6:30 pm. The speakers for the discussion were Dr. Meenu Bhambhani, Head, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and Head, Corporate Social Responsibility at MphasiS, Bangalore; Mr. Arvind Narain, Lawyer, Alternative Law Forum, Bangalore.
The event started with the release of the book authored by Ms. Kothari by Justice S. Rajendra Babu, Former Chief Justice of India, who observed in his introductory comments that those who were disabled needed a much stronger legal support so as to play their rightful role in society.
In their observations, Dr. Meenu Bhambhani and Mr. Arvind Narain highlighted the comprehensive manner in which Ms. Jayna Kothari has examined the Act from a historical perspective, giving an overview of the various legal approaches towards addressing disability related discrimination as well as the various provisions of the Act like the definition of disability, affirmative action, equal opportunities, reservation in employment and implementation. Ms. Jayna Kothari stressed that while legal provisions could only provide a framework of support, what was really needed was a sea-change in the attitude and mindset of the people and empathise with the disabled, instead of being satisfied with expressions of token sympathy.
The Question- And- Answer session, following the discussion, was both lively and informative.
