Bangalore International Centre had arranged a panel discussion on “Caste and Education - Facing the Facts” on Friday, 5th August, 2016 at 6.30 PM at its Auditorium. The panellists present were Cynthia Stephen, Sudipto Mondal and Deepa Dhanraj. The discussion was chaired and moderated by Ammu Joseph.
The panelists discussed about the caste based discrimination within the Educational system like the untimely death of Rohith Vemula, a young PhD scholar at the University of Hyderabad, in mid-January 2016 which garnered far more media and public attention than the equally tragic suicides of many other Dalit students in educational institutions in many parts of the country over many years. The panellists discussed all these and related issues in a no-holds-barred session.
In a searing indictment, all the panellists pointed out as to how the efforts of the first generation learners from amongst the Dalits to enter the portals of higher education were being frustrated all over the years by the insensitivities of the system and how this is, in fact, inevitably leading to increasing militancy of the Dalits. They warned that if immediate corrective measures ae not taken, the system itself would be swept away by the flood of militancy. The assembled audience agreed with this grim forecast.
