Bangalore International Centre had arranged the screening of a documentary film “Bachelor Girls ” on Friday, 2nd December, 2016 at 6.30 PM at its auditorium. The Director of the film Ms. Shikha Makan was present during the screening. Ms. Arundhati Ghosh and Mr. Eric Savage were in conversation with Ms. Shikha Makan after the screening. Dr. Sujata Kelkar Shetty chaired and moderated the conversation and discussion.
The film was about the story of single independent women facing housing discrimination in the heart of, Mumbai, the leading urban metropolis of India, because of their status of being 'unmarried'. ‘Bachelor Girls' as labeled by the society, struggle to find homes amidst many biases, and question the idea of freedom for women in today's modern India.
The screening highlighted the plights of single women finding their own independent space in metropolitan cities and urban centre and how they cope with this.
The Q & A session following the interactive session clearly empathized with the phenomenon, but had no tangible solution.
